Amalgam alternatives consist of a wide
variety of other materials. However, there has not been a
material produced that is as durable as dental amalgams.
Currently, alternatives to dental amalgam include composites
and sealants. Pit sealants, fissure
sealants, resin restoration, and glass ionomers are often
used as an alternative to dental amalgams. Individuals who
utilize sealants often have no problems with decay. Resin
restoration is typically utilized when there is a fracture
in the enamel.
Glass ionomers bond well to the tooth
structure and is a quick and painless procedure. Although
there are several alternatives to amalgams, most do not have
the durability that dental amalgams have. Newer technology
continues to improve the durability and price of alternative
composites used for fillings.
Gold foil, cast metal, and ceramic are
other forms of amalgam alternatives. Composite fillings
contain no mercury as well as being tooth colored. It is
important to research the several forms of alternative
filling treatments before choosing.
Due to the advance in technology there
are several types of alternatives to amalgams. Individuals
should discuss alternative options with their dentists.
There is an increasing number of individuals who are
choosing to use amalgam alternatives. Dentists are now
giving patients the choice of using amalgam or alternative
materials for their fillings.
