WHY USE MERCURY

Mercury is used in dental fillings because it forms solutions with other metals and alloys. This produces an extremely durable dental device. The chemical stability is excellent in oral environments. Using mercury in dental fillings causes the device to become permanently shaped.

The amount of mercury in dental fillings is approximately 50 percent of the solution, the other materials consist of tin, gold or silver powder. The filling that results from using mercury and other materials produces an amalgam that adheres well to tooth enamel.

Dental amalgam is considered a safe and effective method in treating cavities. Amalgams are durable, inexpensive, and easy to apply. Although there is no scientific studies that have proven that the mercury in dental amalgams are unsafe, individuals with concerns regarding the mercury levels in amalgams should consult with their dentist.

There are alternative materials that are utilized in treating cavities. However, there are none that have proven as durable as amalgam. There are several individuals that would like to discontinue the use of amalgams due to the levels of mercury in them.

There are extensive studies and a continuing effort to research the effects of mercury used in amalgams. Due to the lack of scientific evidence that mercury causes health related problems, mercury will continue to be used in amalgams. It is said that mercury vapor is released during chewing and teeth brushing. However, there is inadequate levels of mercury vapor to cause harmful effects.
